Maybe I’ll lose some weight
Maybe I’ll clear my junk
Maybe I’ll just get drunk on apple wine
Me, I’ll be just fine and dandy
Lord it’s like a hard candy Christmas
I’m barely getting through tomorrow
But still I won’t let sorrow bring me way down
Oh yes… there’s a story behind Dolly Parton’s Hard Candy Christmas song! When I decided to record this country classic, I had no idea the story behind the song, just that it definitely had a melancholy tone. So like an actress preparing for her part, I had to do a little bit of research before I could sing it with the emotion and vulnerability I felt drawn to express. I really only knew the chorus: “I’ll be fine and dandy, Lord it’s like a Hard Candy Christmas, I’m barely getting through tomorrow but still I won’t let sorrow bring me down.” Wanting to create my own “Candy Fernaux” version, I was even more curious when I found the music video and soundtrack from the movie “Best Little Whore House in Texas”.
Having lived in Texas most of my adult life, I’ve heard stories about the Chicken Ranch, a brothel south of La Grange. I knew that it stayed open for business long after prostitution was outlawed. When they finally shut down the brothel in the early 1970’s, almost ten years later, “The Best Little Whore House in Texas” was filmed about the Chicken Ranch and Dolly Parton starred as the madam.
Hard Candy Christmas, written by Carol Hall and sung by Dolly. The storyline takes you through what the girls are dealing with—figuring out where to go and what to do next. Dolly tells them, “we’ll all be just fine”. Now this song makes perfect sense! (See full lyrics below)
I hope you enjoy Hard Candy Christmas, my very first “Candy Country” Christmas Song! The holidays can be hard, lonely and even depressing in times of transition. This song is a reminder that you’ll be just “fine and dandy” and will make it through hard times, one tomorrow at a time.

Hard Candy Christmas
Dolly Parton
Hey, maybe I’ll dye my hair
Maybe I’ll move somewhere
Maybe I’ll get a car
Maybe I’ll drive so far
That I’ll lose track
Me, I’ll bounce right back
Maybe I’ll sleep real late
Maybe I’ll lose some weight
Maybe I’ll clear my junk
Maybe I’ll just get drunk on apple wine
Me, I’ll be just fine and dandy
Lord it’s like a hard candy Christmas
I’m barely getting through tomorrow
But still I won’t let sorrow bring me way down
I’ll be fine and dandy
Lord it’s like a hard candy Christmas
I’m barely getting through tomorrow
But still I won’t let sorrow get me way down
Hey, maybe I’ll learn to sew
Maybe I’ll just lie low
Maybe I’ll hit the bars
Maybe I’ll count the stars until dawn
Me, I will go on
Maybe I’ll settle down
Maybe I’ll just leave town
Maybe I’ll have some fun
Maybe I’ll meet someone
And make him mine
Me, I’ll be just fine and dandy
Lord it’s like a hard candy Christmas
I’m barely getting through tomorrow
But still I won’t let sorrow bring me way down
(Steel Guitar Solo)
I’ll be fine and dandy
Lord it’s like a hard candy Christmas
I’m barely getting through tomorrow
But still I won’t let sorrow bring me way down
‘Cause I’ll be fine
(I’ll be fine)
Oh, I’ll be fine
