As a musician and songwriter, I am always curious to know the inspiration behind songs that resonate with me. I love to sit around a campfire with a group of unknown writers as we share our souls just as much as I enjoy attending writers rounds here in Nashville. From the small tiny coffee shop to large a stadium concert with a huge production like PINK (!!), it’s the connection that I seek. Why did the song come to life? What happened to create this 3 minute miracle- to tell this story in the form of a song?

My mom is the first person to say “tell me the story behind this song” when she hears my new material. I pull inspiration from real life situations that I’m living, conversations I’m having, or sometimes a lightning bolt hits me and I just know I must write the song!

Last month in the studio, I had a song called “Kick Ass Take Names” I was planning to cut. It was a party girl anthem and it just didn’t seem to fit into the same vein with the rest of my songs, so I decided to put it on the back burner.  Ironically, at the same time, I started an online course with Mel Robbins called “The Power of You” where she announced a new endeavor with Audible- coaching people in business and life. And guess what!? the program is titled “Kick Ass with Mel Robbins.” Lightning bolt!

Listening to Mel’s program, it struck me that that it doesn’t matter who we are or where we come from, we all can get “stuck”. Sometimes it’s for a season, sometimes it seems like a lifetime! We can get stuck in the past, stuck in painful childhood circumstances, stuck in jobs we hate, stuck in relationships that aren’t healthy or just don’t work for us anymore, and the list goes on. Then we look for vices; things to pacify us, things to relieve stress, ways to avoid doing what we don’t feel like doing to climb out of that rut.  We get stuck doing the wrong things to make us forget in the moment what we are avoiding and why we aren’t taking action to get to higher ground to start creating the life we want to live! Instead, we just wallow in the crap that runs around inside our heads all day long.

Inspired by Mel’s passion, my own inspiration struck and this new song “Kick Ass”, written with one of my favorite co-writers Mandy Brook, came to life! I love the driving beat of the melody and the message is very clear. “You’re everything you need to be, right here, right now…to change your life and chase your dreams.”  It’s a song about breaking free, breaking down the things that are holding you back, and getting ready to kick it in life and take action! (To fully understand the meaning of 54321 in the chorus, check out Mel on YouTube or pick up her book “The 5 Second Rule.”)

If this song strikes a nerve or stirs something inside of you, that’s exactly what music is supposed to do! I like to listen to a song and read along with the words so I’m sharing the lyrics with you along with a video that we sent to Mel Robbins.

If you like this song and would want to download it on iTunes, give me a big thumbs up on YouTube or leave a note in the comments below!

A big thanks to Mel Robbins for inspiring me to write this. Now go Kick some Ass today! 😉

“Kick Ass”

When your smoke break

Becomes an all day

Just another way

To hide in your head

Ya spinning your wheels

Yet you’re standing still

Think you can pop a pill

And hang by a thread

What’s stopping you from chasing your dreams

Are ya stuck on auto-pilot when you wanna

When you wanna break free

It’s time to light the world on fire

You’re the only one holding yourself back

No more excuses it’s now or never

54321 Kick Ass – Ha!

Always running late

Need to lose weight

Stuck in a constant state

Procrastinating

Maxed out your plastics

In debt up to the attic

The bills are stacking

Suffocating

Who’s stopping you from chasing your dreams

Are ya stuck on auto pilot when you wanna

When you wanna break free

Now it’s time to light the world on fire

You’re the only one holding yourself back

No more excuses it’s now or never

54321 Kick Ass – Hey

Bring on the fear

Let go of the doubt

You everything you need here right now

So- now’s the time to light the world on fire

You’re the only one holding yourself back

No more excuses it’s now or never

54321 Kick Ass

54321 Kick Ass

54321 and Kick Ass!

Gone Fishin’

By Candy Fernaux and Wyatt Easterling

We all have a story about the one that got away
There’s more fish in the sea is all I hear ‘em say
Time to put myself back out there today
As I dip my toes in the dating pool
It’s a brave new world with online tools
Everybody’s doin’ it so it must be cool

GONE FISHIN’
Throw my line and start wishing
I’ll catch what I’ve been missing
I got a nibble a wink, will we swim or sink,
I’m Gone fishin’

No worms or flies gonna hook my mate
I’ll post a few pictures cause that’s my bait
Cast my line then sit back and wait

Beware of bottom feeders huntin’ sugar mamas
Cradle robbers and prima donna’s
Playboys hauling all sorts of drama

GONE FISHIN’
Throw my line and start wishing
I’ll catch what I’ve been missing
I got a nibble a wink, will we swim or sink
I’m Gone fishin’

I’m just a country girl that likes to rock
I’ve got a few more tricks in my tackle box
I’ll be reeling in the catch of the day
He’ll measure up or be on his way
Size does matter what else can I say

GONE FISHIN’
Throw my line and start wishing
I’ll catch what I’ve been missing
I got a nibble a wink, will we swim or sink, I’m Gone fishin’

Fishin’… fishin’… fishin’… Gone fishin’… yeah…
Gone fishin’… fishin’.. Gone fishin’… Gone fishin’…

Hard Candy Christmas

By Dolly Parton and Carol Hall
© 1982

Maybe I’ll dye my hair
Maybe I’ll move somewhere
Maybe I’ll get a car
Maybe I’ll drive so far
That I’ll lose track
Me, I’ll bounce right back

Maybe I’ll sleep real late
Maybe I’ll lose some weight
Maybe I’ll clear my junk
Maybe I’ll just get drunk
On apple wine
Me, I’ll be just

Fine and dandy
Lord it’s like a hard candy Christmas
I’m barely getting through tomorrow
But still I won’t let
Sorrow bring me way down
I’ll be fine and dandy
Lord it’s like a hard candy Christmas
I’m barely getting through tomorrow
But still I won’t let
Sorrow get me way down

Hey, maybe I’ll learn to sew
Maybe I’ll just lie low
Maybe I’ll hit the bars
Maybe I’ll count the stars until dawn
Me, I will go on

Maybe I’ll settle down
Maybe I’ll just leave town
Maybe I’ll have some fun
Maybe I’ll meet someone
And make him mine
Me, I’ll be just

Fine and dandy
Lord it’s like a hard candy Christmas
I’m barely getting through tomorrow
Still I won’t let
Sorrow bring me way down
I’ll be fine and dandy
Lord it’s like a hard candy Christmas
I’m barely getting through tomorrow
But still I won’t let
Sorrow bring me way down

I’ll be fine
I’ll be fine

Drinkin You Out of my Mind

By Candy Fernaux and Wyatt Easterling
© 2015

I’m gonna get dressed up to paint this town
Stay out all night and burn it down
No more sitting around singing the blues….
It’s time to face the cold hard truth
And get started getting over you
There’s a brand new fairytale about to begin….

Tonight I’m drinkin’ you out of my mind
Working on leaving your memory behind
I’ll raise a glass and you can kiss my ass
For treating me so unkind
Tonight I’m drinkin’ you out of my mind

Prince charming sits on every stool
Buying me drinks and playing it cool
I wonder which one will be the first out of the chute….
When you get bucked off and hit the ground
You’ve got to saddle up for another round
What better way to leave you behind….

Tonight I’m drinkin’ you out of my mind
Working on leaving your memory behind
I’ll raise a glass and you can kiss my ass
For treating me so unkind
Tonight I’m drinkin’ you out of my mind

Tomorrow I’ll wake and swear I’m done with men
Kick him out of the bed and vow to never drink again
And this is where the vicious cycle begins

Tonight I’m drinkin’ you out of my mind
Working on leaving your memory behind
I’ll raise a glass and you can kiss my ass
For treating me so unkind
Tonight I’m drinkin’ you out of my mind

Tonight I’m drinkin’ you out of my mind
Tonight I’m drinkin’ you out of my mind

Sweet innocence

By Candy Fernaux and Wyatt Easterling
© 2015

In the beginning, there’s a girl
Innocent and young and she rules her world
She’s sugar, and she’s spice
She’s precious and everything nice

She has sweet innocence
She don’t have a care
Sweet innocence
She don’t know it’s there

Then one day there comes a boy
Who breaks her heart and steals her joy
She hurts and she cries
She swears she’s going to die

He takes her sweet innocence
He no longer cares
Sweet innocence
She’s alone and scared

Gone are the days where she feels free
So full of doubt and agony
She’s like a ship lost out at sea
Living day to day aimlessly

She wants her sweet innocence
It always seems to flee
She cries for sweet innocence
She wants to be free

But the world, it doesn’t end
The Son comes out she finds a friend
Shining bright all around
He’ll never ever let her down

He brings her Sweet Innocence
She no longer cares
Sweet Innocence
She don’t know it’s there
Sweet Innocence
Sweet Innocence
Sweet Innocence

Beauty Don’t Come Cheap

By Candy Fernaux and Wyatt Easterling

He complains about women being gold diggers
They want dinner, drinks, and flowers go figure
He brags about the dates he’s had this week
And bitches about the money he’s blown on each
Obviously he hasn’t a clue
About all the things we women do

I told him before he rambled on anymore
What a woman spends before she walks out her door
From the top of her head to the soles of her feet
I explained the cost to look so sweet
I said honey, Beauty Don’ t Come Cheap

I’m slavin’ on my figure nearly every day
‘Cause I’m not naturally built this way
And this pretty face takes a lot of product
With facials and peels and did I mention make up
Victoria’s Secret gives me more than I’ve got
And I know you men love that a lot

I told him before he rambled on anymore
What a woman spends before she walks out her door
From the top of her head to the soles of her feet
I explained the cost to look so sweet
I said honey, Beauty Don’ t Come Cheap

Joe makes Jeans that fit my tush just right
Jimmy Choo gives me just enough heighth A mani, a pedi, bikini wax
Then I’m off to the spa for an herbal wrap
And all this is only what you can see
You can’t put a price on what’s beneath

I told him before he rambled on anymore
What a woman spends before she walks out her door
From the top of her head to the soles of her feet
I explained the cost to look so sweet
I said honey, Beauty Don’ t Come Cheap
Honey, Beauty Don’t Come Cheap Cheap Cheap don’t be so cheap
‘Cause nobody likes a cheap man…..

West With The Night

By Candy Fernaux and Wyatt Easterling
© 2015

He flew an old airplane and could land on a dime
A long haul trucker most of the time
He wore pearl snap shirts, a white Stetson hat
He was a maverick and a saint

He’d come flying in Sunday’s and circle the house
All of us kids would come scrambling out
We’d run to the field and watch him sailing in
Oh the stories ‘n the trinkets from the places he’d been

Then it was up to the clouds and away he would go
Or kicking up dust in his truck down the road
Coming or going he was always a sight
Riding into the sunset…West with the Night….

A flat top Gibson never far from his side
A black saddle with silver whenever he’d ride
You could say that Gramps was one of a kind
The silent type ‘til he spoke his mind

Then it was up to the clouds and away he would go
Or kicking up dust in his truck down the road
Coming or going he was always a sight
Riding into the sunset…West with the Night….

He stood ten feet tall in everyone’s eyes
A cowboy gentleman – his way of life

Then it was up to the clouds and away he would go
Or kicking up dust in his truck down the road
Coming or going he was always a sight
Riding into the sunset… West with the Night….
…………………West with the Night…………………….

farm girl

By Candy Fernaux and Paul Jefferson
© 2018

She put a six inch lift kit
On her daddy’s old Ford truck
She’s got a boat hooked on the hitch
She can back it up (she can back it up)

She can drive a stick shift
Four on the floor
A V8 or a slant six
An’ she can change the oil

She’s a farm girl
From Texas up to North Dakota
A farm girl
God broke the mold when He made her
A Farm girl
Can the chick get a hallelujah
Farm girl
She’s a farm girl

She followed the bright lights
Out to the big city
They said she’d make the big time
All she’s got to be is pretty (and she’s so pretty)

Wasn’t long ‘fore she was missin’
Home on the rural route
Take the girl out of the country
But you can’t take the country out of a

Farm girl
From Texas up to North Dakota
A farm girl
God broke the mold when He made her a
Farm girl
Can the chick get a hallelujah
Farm girl
She’s a farm girl

Homemade hot as cherry pie
She’s a spoonful sweeter
If you been looking in a stack
You just found a needle

She’s a farm girl
From Texas up to North Dakota
A farm girl
God broke the mold when He made her
A Farm girl
She’s a farm girl
God broke the mold when He made her
A Farm girl
Can the chick get a hallelujah
Farm girl
She’s a farm girl
She’s a farm girl
