There’s Nothing Better
There’s nothing better than Summer fading into Fall
the crisp fresh air beckoning a new season
a new space, a new place
There’s nothing better than falling into my comfy bed
after traveling down life’s highway for weeks on end
catching a motel in the next small town
when I’m too tired to drive another mile.
There’s nothing better than an ice cold Coke
bubbling, fizzing and burning
all the way down my throat
as I pour it from the thick glass bottle.
There’s nothing better than an old friend
where conversation flows freely and easily
as the years between our last visit disappear.
No judgment or criticism, free to be just us
laughing for hours, shedding tears
reconnecting through the troubles and triumphs
strengthening the bond that time only makes stronger.
There’s nothing better than the smell of a horse
that nuzzles me with his muzzle
for the carrot hidden in my pocket
to treat him for just being one of God’s magnificent creatures.
The comfort and connection that emerges
without saying a word.
